Pukeko Room Philosophy

Read about Pukeko Room - Getting Ready for School

The Pukeko Room values each individual child, family, whanau and staff as joint partners in learning. As a room we believe in developing strong and ongoing relationships that embrace a community feeling.

Maori are acknowledged as the first people of New Zealand and we encourage an awareness and appreciation of the bi-cultural heritage of our country.

Our learning is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, which was founded in the town of Reggio Emilia, Italy in the 1940's.  The approach focuses on the images of the child as having 100 languages-languages to express themselves and allows them to be capable and competent learners, while using their surrounding environment as 'the third teacher'.

Teachers value an environment where all children feel safe and confident to initiate their own learning. Children are encouraged to gain a sense of themselves as people with rights, as well as developing the understanding of the responsibility they have towards others.

We support, encourage & respect the richness of individual learning styles, by providing an environment that allows the children freedom of choice to explore, experiment, challenge and reflect on their own learning.

Learning spaces are planned to give our children the opportunity to independently choose how their day will unfold, by providing materials and opportunities that engage their interest and attention in a meaningful way. We incorporate the natural environment in our learning, encouraging the children to respect their surroundings, as well as each other.
